2010 Census: Quality Assurance - It's In Our Hands
This summer marks the peak of 2010 Census Quality Assurance Operations. A small number of households will receive a follow-up phone call or visit from a census taker to ensure that the data we collected on your form is as accurate and complete as possible. Click here to watch the video and learn more about the 3 major Quality Assurance Operations and share it with friends, family and community members to help spread the word about the quality of the 2010 Census.
Your Help is Still Needed for a Complete and Accurate Count
Please cooperate with Census workers that contact you via phone or in person. Below is what to expect in the next few months: (To view in Spanish, click here.)
-
Non-response Follow-up (May 1-Jul 10, 2010) and Re-interview (May 7-Jul 27, 2010): Census takers will visit homes that did not return a completed questionnaire by early April to conduct a personal interview and obtain the required information.
-
Coverage Follow-up (Apr 26, 2010-Aug 13, 2010): This is a telephone operation which checks to ensure that no person is left out nor counted in more than one place in the Census and clarifies collected responses to improve the accuracy of Census data.
-
Vacant Delete Check (Jul 24-Aug 25, 2010); Census workers visit to verify addresses that enumerators recorded in the Non-response Follow-up as either vacant or not a housing unit on Census Day.
-
Field Verification (Aug 6-Sep 3, 2010): Census workers verify the existence of units in which we have a completed form, but do not match an address in the Census Master Address File.

Do I Have to Talk to the Census Taker?
Yes. Your participation in the 2010 Census is vital and required by law, (Section 221, of Title
13 of the U.S. Code). However, rather than rely on criminal charges, the Census Bureau is very successful in getting participation by explaining the importance of the questions they ask and how the information benefits our communities. To
find out what you should do if a census taker visits you, click here. Your privacy and confidentiality is a priority. The census taker who collects your information is sworn for life to protect your data under Federal Law Title 13. Those who violate the oath face criminal penalties: Under federal law, the penalty for unlawful disclosure is a fine of up to $250,000 or imprisonment for up to 5 years, or both.
Help for non-English speaking respondents
Census takers will have a flashcard containing a sentence about the 2010 Census written in approximately 50 languages. If a resident doesn't speak English, the census taker shows the flashcard to the resident, and the resident points to the language he/she speaks. A census crew Leader will then reassign the case to a person who speaks that language.
