The Village of Hoffman Estates is a participant in the Clean Air Counts Initiative. Clean Air Counts is a northeastern Illinois regional initiative to reduce ozone-causing emissions and to improve air quality. Municipalities contribute to the effort by implementing emission-reducing strategies and coordinating outreach efforts to encourage emission reduction throughout the community.
Hoffman Estates was recently recognized for its efforts in a Crain's Magazine spotlight which can be viewed here. The Village currently engages in several clean air initiatives and has fostered clean air programs, including creation of the HOTLine shuttle service (Pace bus route 557), purchase of hybrid vehicles, promotion of native landscaping in the Prairie Stone Business Park development agreement, and tree-planting requirements in the Village Code.
A recent campaign bolstered by Clean Air Counts program is the Anti-Idling campaign, "Idling Gets You Nowhere". The intent of the campaign is to reduce or eliminate idling cars at pick-up and drop-off locations such as schools, libraries, public buildings, and shopping centers. In addition to saving fuel, turning off a vehicle reduces the risk of serious health issues such as asthma in children and the elderly. The Village of Hoffman Estates is already contributing to reducing idle vehicles by passing a Village policy which calls for immediate reduction in municipal fleet car idling. While public safety vehicles are permitted to remain turned on, other municipal cars must be turned off and on to avoid using fuel and contributing to polluting emissions.
